Ride for Renewables

Ride for Renewables - Sunday, June 28th
Say no to nuclear bailouts!

On Sunday June 28th, hundreds of cyclists will ride with a message – we want a 100% renewable energy grid. Starting at the wind turbine at the Exhibition Grounds  in Toronto, and ending at the wind turbine at the Pickering Nuclear Station, cyclists will bring their message to the public, the media and politicians.

The group will ride along the lakeshore, stopping at various sites along the way to discuss renewable electricity options for Ontario. The ride will culminate at Pickering with a clear message – say no to Premier McGuinty’s plea for federal subsidies for more dangerous and unreliable Ontario nukes.

Our Message: Ontario can have a 100% renewable electricity grid within 20 years. Neither federal nor provincial taxpayers should subsidize nuclear power when there are greener and lower cost options to meet all our electricity needs. We say NO to the proposed new nuclear reactors at Darlington power station that Premier McGunity is asking Stephen Harper to subsidize, and YES to conservation and renewable energy including wind, solar, biomass, hydro, geothermal, and more.

Route: We’ll start the ride at the Wind Turbine at Exhibition Place in Toronto and follow the Waterfront Trail to Pickering. The route is approximately 50 km. (one way). We can take our bikes on the GO Train back to Toronto.

Food

Please bring a lunch, water and snacks. OCAA will provide fruit and other snacks.

Bike Gear

OCAA will be sure that there are some bike mechanics and basic tools on the ride, but please be sure your bike is in good shape before embarking on this 50 km journey. Be sure your tires are properly inflated, that your chain is lubed, and that your brakes are in good working order. Especially for longer trips like this, it’s best to not carry anything on your back – we encourage you to have a bike rack with panniers to carry your food, extra water etc. If you need to borrow any gear, please let us know.

Increasing energy efficiency is much less costly than building new generating sources and the potential for increasing efficiency in Ontario is huge.

Ontario's Green Future

Sign the petition for a Nuclear Cost Responsibility Act for Ontario

Every nuclear construction project in Ontario's history has gone massively over budget. And we are all on the hook for these runaway costs, paying a nuclear debt surcharge on every kilowatt of electricity we use. Renewable and natural gas generating projects are strictly prohibited from passing on cost overruns to consumers or taxpayers. It’s time to level the playing field and end nuclear’s free ride.
