Nuclear Power: A False Solution to Climate Change
In the face of declining nuclear power generation worldwide, nuclear industry leaders and their political and media allies are suggesting that this technology is an appropriate and indispensable solution to fight climate change. But how realistic is this?

France tilting toward nuclear phase-out France is committed to reducing its nuclear dependence to 50% by 2025, which would leave ON the most heavily nuclear dependent jurisdiction in the world.

Call me emotional, but my anti-nuclear arguments are based on evidence “Peak nuclear” was as long ago as 2002; the long decline to obsolescence is well under way. Clean energy technologies, principally solar, wind, energy efficiency and distributed storage are rapidly out-competing nuclear energy on cost, speed of installation and community acceptance.

The Secret City Photo essay the Manhattan Project -- the secret World War II program that developed the atomic bomb. Most of the tens of thousands of workers and their families were unaware of the exact nature of their final product until the nuclear bombs were dropped on Japan in 1945.

The Enduring Nuclear Threat The spread of nuclear weapons as well as existing stockpiles of nuclear weapons remain a serious threat to humanity even though the high-tension days of the Cold War have passed. The big nuclear powers continue to modernize their nuclear weapons, countries with smaller arsenals are expanding their capabilities, and terrorists could pose the most sinister threat of all.

Nuclear Power: Dead in the Water it Poisoned “Radiation is a carcinogen. It may also cause other adverse health effects, including genetic defects in the children of exposed parents or mental retardation in the children of mothers exposed during pregnancy.” US EPA

Nuclear case to test assessment law before Supreme Court
What does a nuclear power plant on Lake Ontario have in common with the Northern Gateway pipeline? Both projects fall under the same environmental assessment law, which is why a pair of Ontario lawyers says a case they’re trying to appeal to Canada’s highest court is so important. Here too.

East end given iodine pills as nuclear disaster precaution 200,000 GTA homes and businesses have just received pills to protect them from thyroid cancer in the event of a nuclear disaster. But residents within 50 km of all nuclear facilities can order the pills free here. “Our nuclear emergency plans predate Chernobyl. With 10 reactors in the GTA that’s completely reckless. The Ontario government needs to upgrade its nuclear emergency plans, publicly and transparently and it’s almost five years since Fukushima and they haven’t done it yet.” More on this here.

Durham Region asks Province to expand nuclear evacuation zones Durham Regional council is calling on the Province to be more transparent in reviewing nuclear emergency plans, and consider expanding the current 10-kilometre evacuation zones around the Pickering and Darlington nuclear stations.

Nuclear hearing considers long licence for OPG Darlington Public hearings were held last week on Ontario Power Generation’s request for an unprecedented 13 year extension of their licence and approval to rebuild and extend the life of 4 reactors at Darlington.

Renewables and Conservation

Sweden's Green transition gathers pace Sweden is closing nuclear plants and airports, selling off coal mines, spending billions to cut its greenhouse gas emissions, increasing green spending in developing countries, and is determined to lead by example at COP21 in Paris.

Morocco poised to become a solar superpower with launch of desert mega-project World’s largest concentrated solar power plant, powered by the Saharan sun, set to help renewables provide almost half the country’s energy by 2020. 500,000 crescent-shaped solar mirrors glitter across the desert skyline. The 800 rows follow the sun as it tracks across the heavens.

Obama Launches Solar Energy Job Program For 50,000 Veterans  In addition to the veterans solar job program and new efficiency standards to save energy, the Department of Agriculture will fund $70 million in solar and renewable energy projects in rural and farm areas.

Take Action!

Vote for EDF to win the Pinocchio Award French energy company EDF is using its controversial sponsorship of the international climate talks in Paris to launch a large-scale PR campaign to brand nuclear power as a ‘carbon-free’ and ‘clean’ energy source. In fact, nuclear is anything but clean, and escalating costs and subsidies are better spent on genuine solutions. Vote now!

Protect children from radiation exposure A little radiation is BAD for you. It can give you cancer and other diseases. Children are uniquely vulnerable. Petition.

Don’t Nuke the Climate Please sign the petition in support of a nuclear-free, carbon-free energy system and to prevent nuclear power from being considered as a climate solution when the world's governments meet at the COP 21 conference in Paris in Dec. 2015.

Stop Radioactive Contamination of the Pacific Ocean from the Fukushima nuclear power plant site Please sign the petition. It is unacceptable that radioactive contamination is continuing in our oceans.

Stop the Great Lakes Nuclear Dump Please sign the petition to oppose OPG’s plans to bury their nuclear waste on the shore of Lake Huron.
