The Do More With Less Model High reliability Ontario’s nuclear plants, by comparison, have suffered repeated breakdowns and have never come close to matching the level of reliability of gas-fired generating stations over the long term. Because "distributed" systems rely on many smaller spread out units to produce power instead of a tiny handful of giant reactors, an outage at any one location will have almost no effect on our electricity supply. When a giant nuclear unit goes down (an all-too-common experience in Ontario), it leaves a big hole in our power system that is usually filled by dirty coal power. |
